Trite, but always a good reminder.Whenever I read a fortune from these cookies, I always think about the person who is sitting at a computer typing these up.  These fortunes are like clues that can give away something about what’s going on in his life, what’s on his mind, or how he was feeling when he was writing it.  In this case, I’d like to think that he was feeling particularly wistful that day.  Maybe 70% wistful, 20% hopeful, and 10% resolute.

We travel, initially, to lose ourselves; and we travel, next, to find ourselves.

work philosophy

Some great thoughts about working in the creative business from Ben Malbon, a dude joining the Google Creative Lab team.  I picked out a few of the one liners that resonated with me:

Only people matter
Great ideas are just what happen when the right people are put together and organized (or not) in the right way.

Ask forgiveness, not permission
The people that make a difference tend to be the ones that don’t seek approval first.

Awesome is always scary
The vast chasm between really good and extraordinary is filled with fear.

Do less, but do it better
We try and do too much because we’re not honest with ourselves about what we’re best at…  Distill, simplify and encourage focus to eliminate nonsense, or the chance that nonsense might occur.  Strategy is, indeed, the art of sacrifice.

PowerPoint is the enemy of awesome
There’s an inverse relationship between the quantity of PowerPoint produced by a team and both the quality of work produced by that team, and their level of happiness.

Make sure it’s fun
It’s all just a gigantic game.

My first reaction was that this quote sounds really morbid, but I guess it could go both ways.  Either the guy typing this in was having a particularly bad day, or he was trying to impart a life lesson about how your mindset affects your capacity to be truly happy. And since when did fortune cookies stop doling out fortunes?(via Vandehey’s fortune cookie from a sketched out Pho place in LA)
